5FM’s Birthday

It’s 5FM’s Birthday this month and we want to hear what YOUR wishes are!

What do you most wish for?  Is it to meet Jay-Z?  To win R1 Million Bucks…or a brand new truck?  Or do you wish for world peace or the elimination of HIV/AIDS?  No matter what you wish for, we wanna know and it’s our birthday so you can tell us!  If we deem your wish on our birthday THE BEST then we are going to give you the chance to distribute some AWESOME prizes to all the worthy charities we feature every week on Youngblood 5.

You will be able to hand out prizes valued at R90 000, courtesy of MANGO, to a bunch of charities who really need your help!

5FM Birthday Wish (via e-mail)... I LOVE YOU 5FM!!! Thank you for the best years of my life! Happy birthday to 5fm and a HUGE congrats to you, the DJs, because no matter how good a station is, ultimately it’s the DJs who make you tune in daily. Yvette.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... Unfortunately I don’t have any heartwarming stories of when "Radio 5" started, however I am looking forward to when I look back on my life and all the big moments both good and bad and remember having 5FM along the way with me – kind of a side track to my life. JJ.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... My 5FM memory is how I started listening to 5FM... My mom just got a new car and the only radio station we could find was 5FM and we couldn’t find our regular radio station because we didn’t know how to use the new car's radio, besides to switch it on and off. That was 2 years ago, but I haven’t looked look back ever since. YOU GUYS ROCK MY SOCKS :) Luv Che.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... My favorite 5 memory must be the day Bruce and Martin explained why your head is sore after a night of boozing. My fiancé and I were talking about it just this weekend! Sasha and Ian F made my day on a Sunday. I had to listen to the top 40 with you guys. Thanks for all the great memories and hope to have many more with you and 5. Happy birthday. Mwah. Nicky.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... I remember listening to ACDC and New Kids on the Block at the age of 12 on 5FM. Now 20 years later, I share these precious moments with my 6- year-old son. I remember coming home every afternoon and lying in front of the radio doing homework. Or Barney Simon and his scary stories at night. Growing up with Alex J drove my dad crazy. I remember one day when I was asked what I want to be when I grow up, my answer was a DJ. I wanted to be the next Alex J. My dad almost had a stroke! LOL. Years later I did DJ for a club in Stellenbosch 'cause I kept the passion for my music. The seed that was planted by the most amazing radio station EVER!! From the bottom of our hearts we would love to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY 5FM. HOPE THE NEXT GENERATION WILL ALSO GROW UP LISTENING TO YOU. LOVE Gwyneth, Haylin and NJ.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... I remember being in the bush in 1984 on the border of Angola. Dressed in an amazing brown uniform. Used to throw the the "aerial" high into the tree top and tune in to, was it then LM Radio? Used to pretend we couldn't get comms from the HQ, but our comms with "5FM" were always 10/10. Cheers, Michael.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... Always nice to hear all the 5FM shows....ANYTIME. I remember "Radio 5" started in LM - Lourenco Marques, now called Maputo - where I was born in 1982 :) :) :) My father used to tell me about it and listening to it while driving just made me smile :) I've been living in CT for the last 7 years but anytime I hear anything about my city i get HAPPY VERY HAPPY :) :) SO YOU MADE MY DAY! REGARDS NAILA :)

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... I recall clearly in one of Leon Schuster's movies (Shucks) where two "Radio 5" DJs were presenters in the movie. Yet I can't recall who they were. The one had a black beard though! Could have been Rafe Lavine? Good stuff - happy birthday! Jacques.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... I remember the old voices of 5FM... People like Barney Simon, Uncle Paul, Cleonie Cassidy. I also remember listening to the Top 40 presented by the Kaycee. The one “listener feature” I remember with fondness would be “Screw the Playlist”. Remember those days? 5FM has come a long way since then, and I trust it will have more success in the next 34 years. Thank you for doing what you guys do, for entertaining us, playing the songs that we like. Have an awesome day! Regards Jeremy.

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... That guy spoke about the radio Jet Jungle etc... Do you remember the PHOTO COMICS Kaptein Duiwel, Chunky Charlie. I would love to see some of those and I would like to buy some just to see how CORNY our culture was. Ochre, avocado green....the seventies were hideous. LM Radeeeooo "Shortwave on the 49 meter band" (and 75 meter band at night) Pearson

Memories of 5FM (via e-mail)... Gotta say, I LOVE the sound clips of the past and 5 Radio/ 5Fm/ 5FM Music.... Even though most of that happened before I was born, I was taken back to some classic DJs and some Classic moments (which I remember at my young age): People like Titch Mataz, Dereck the Bandit, Barney Simon (Watch out, he is coming through the door – he didn’t even open it) and who can forget Alex J (in his hey day). But I think one of the days (and times in general) I will never forget was F and Martinengo Saturday’s (and week days) but Saturday broadcasts and especially the major moment - “Van the Private Eye”. I have had days where I still hear people playing it on podcasts or recorded files. Sasha and Ian really made my days. Will be remembered as the best duo – At least by me. Hence here is to many more years. Chao Chao, Conrad

I started listen to Radio LM when I was in the 1954 Gym and at 23.59 – Eric Eagen would, “ to you, and to you and especially to you” Vya Con Dios. Happy birthday and hope to have many more listening years Regards, Bob.

Yoh! Love this competition! Now I am not sure if I should give my personal wishes or wishes for this beautiful country of ours...OK, I give both :-)

My wish for South Africa is that we ALL work together to transform HUMAN RIGHTS into HUMAN REALITIES. We have this amazing constitution that is the envy of the world but to many it is nothing more than a piece of paper.

My wish for me on 5FM's birthday is a Macbook...PLEASE!!!!! Now I actually wish for many things right now but this would help me the most. My wish for me long term is to succeed on my mission to live for 5 years without money!!!!!

Happy birthday 5FM

Much love

First of all let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY 5FM. I wish I could get lots of money, yes R 1 Million would be very helpful. Not only will it help me build a house for my wife and two daughters, so they can have a place they too can call "home". However, I would wish to donate VERY,VERY generously to National Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS, affectionately known as NAPWA-South Africa, as the advocates of the fight with both HIV and AIDS. I have witnessed day after day the many deaths associated with these two pandemics. The many households that are now headed by youngsters who have had to terminate their studies to look after their siblings and elders, them being children themselves. This is a wish I hope to achieve one way or another, somehow, someday with any help from any source.

Apart from that, may you grow from strength to strength.

Happy Happy Birthday 5FM!! Without 5FM I am not too sure how I would make it through my workday :0) Please keep the awsome music comming.

And so for my birthday wish... well R1 Million would be phenominal, but I what I really really wish for is to be able to have an IVF treatment. My Hubby and I have been trying to start a family for more than 3 years now, and it seems that either luck or finances just aren't on our side.

May South Africa grow from strength to strength!!

Happy birthday five, thanks for getting my morning started every morning. keep Chewning the jams & keeping us informed with all the discussions.

My wish is for a million rand, R500,000.00 for myself and my kids & R500,000.00 for the oncology unit at red cross hospital. My 4 year old son born with cystic fibrosis was diagnosed with cancer in february this year. I've seen so many kids loose their lives to this sickness & i'm sure with the right kinda study there could be an even better cure developed than they already have. Been a single mom of 3 kids is quite hard when you the sole bread winner so with this money i could set up my kids future, buy myself a nice liitle house & maybe even a good holiday. Ultimately i would love to take my kids to disney world as their lives are so prescious, especially my boy as he liFe is lived on a day to day basis & to give them a live changing experience would mean the world to me. I go to sleep everyday thinking will he be alive for us to enjoy milestones in his live, but then i look at him & thank God for keeping him alive thus far.

i love 5fm,most i love the music that play by 5fm.but i which my self to win that money,my point is i nealy live on the street of jhb.but i foght hard not to.as you know in jhb if you are not educated is very hard.i hat to listen to radio 5 those days in order to atleast to know some few words of english in order to look for a job or to do some training.so the whole 1994 i listen to only 5fm and in 1995 i was able to speak english and i went to train for waiter and at end of 1995 i started to work.so to cut the story in short thank you 5fm.so today if i can win i will go on the street of jhb to speak with all people who live in the street.and i will try by all means to send some of them back home.i will talk to them and listen to their problems and after i will try to contact their families.i will be very happy if 5fm can make me to achieve this dream of mine because is something that i wanted to do for a long time.so i think this is my time to help poor people on the street.i think that will put 5fm on the map, especially as you know that 2010 is around the corner.street need to be clean.so me tshidiso and 5fm lets do it KENAKO.................................HAPPY BIRTH DAY 5FM GROW EVEN BIGGER

Happy b-day 5FM, may there be many-many more and may the total of people listening to 5FM just grow by the millions......
Speaking of millions, I wish I could win 3 Million Rand, so that I will be able to pay my mother in-law's cancer treatments and get the best doctors on the matter, so that my husband can finaly spread his wings and start his own business, so that my daughter can go to the best day care centre and so that I can finaly start my studies to become a lawyer

I would want to win a round the world holiday trip to see the globe and my wish would be to put an end to animal suffering around the world too. I would like to go to Denmark and see what i could do to stop the annual slaughter of porpoises, stop the fur trade in the UK, if you ever go onto PETA's website you'll see how cruel people are to animals and with there help and funds i would try help stop animal abuse.

Maybe even locally with farm animals who aren't respected before they are killed for us to eat, i wish humans could treat animals with a little more respect, they have feelings too and are defensless, most animals are so capable of love and i wish abuse would stop.

I want to change the world. And I have a plan to do this. And I plan to use Music to initiate this movement. This spans from the Entertainment industry to the Education System. This is a huge plan, requires a lot of work. But I am now just turned 23, female, I have a broker, connections, and I am working all out to ensure I achieve this - or at least am a pioneer in this movement. Ultimately this plan affects the Education System - but it is approached in a way never done before. This story/plan is so much more complex and bigger than what I have written but I cannot say more on this forum. I will leave you with one thing that is so true: "The thing that frustrates you the most - is the thing you were created to change"
