UPDATE FROM THE LONELY ROAD

POSTED BY FRESH, JULY 20, 2007 11:11 AM | PERMALINK | 0 VOTES

Thabang has now been on The Lonely Road Challenge for 20 days, only two of which have been rest days. He's crossed three borders, is now in country number four, Zambia, and has cycled a total of 1,725km of the nearly 5,500km route. So nearly a third of the challenge is already behind him but he still has a long way to go!

The trip to date has been good and Thabang continues to be overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers. He's been stopped on the road and given bottles of energy drinks and bars by people who have heard about the Challenge, others stop to give him money towards The Lonely Road Foundation, and on a few occasions he's been offered accommodation discounts or bought meals by strangers.

Thabang has managed to keep costs down by camping in remote spots or staying in budget accommodation, but he's also had a few comfortable nights in sponsored hotel rooms - a rare luxury he has revelled in.

As always, Thabang remains in good spirits despite the occasional setback. Many kilometres ago he lost a screw from one of his pedals and has been using a makeshift solution while awaiting the correct part. He's had a few bitterly cold or desperately windy days where he's battled to cycle (and was even blown off his bike by a dust storm), he's pushed his bike 30km through deep, soft sand, he's received permission to cycle on roadworks only to find the tar sticking to the bike, causing longs delays while he cleaned the tyres. And two days ago in Victoria Falls he was robbed of USD100!

The last stretch of 780km was cycled in just over 7 days without a break, so Thabang is currently taking a well-earned rest in Livingstone. The physical strain on his body has been immense so he is happy to be off the bike and resting his legs for the next couple of days before he sets off again on Sunday morning.

Our website has been updated with Thabang's daily diary, photographs, soundbites and videoclips – the web section titled On the Road will give you a very good understanding of Thabang's experiences on The Lonely Road Challenge. Unfortunately updates can't happen in real time when Thabang is in remote locations, so please keep coming back to the website for new information.
