SUNFLOWER FUND

POSTED BY FRESH, SEPTEMBER 23, 2008 05:41 PM | PERMALINK | 1 VOTES

SUMMARY ON THE SUNFLOWER FUND
(DONOR RECRUITMENT AND FUNDRAISING IN SUPPORT OF THE SABMR)
The Sunflower Fund is a non profit organisation dedicated to the recruitment of donors, representative of all ethnic groups in South Africa – (in support of the South African Bone Marrow Registry) - To enable all patients, suffering from life-threatening blood disorders such as leukaemia, aplasia and some genetic disorders, to have the opportunity of finding a suitable donor in order to have a life-saving bone marrow stem cell transplant.
The Sunflower Fund carries the full responsibility nationally for raising the funds needed to meet the costs of all tissue typing of bone marrow donors for the purposes of increasing the SABMR and has played a major role in enabling the SABMR to expand dramatically from 1 000 to over 63,000 donors over the past 8 years.

FURTHER INFO ON BECOMING A DONOR CALL TOLL-FREE – 0800 12 10 82

THE SUNFLOWER FUND MISSION

The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of well informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders. It strives to maintain the associated donor records of the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
WHEN WAS THE SUNFLOWER FUND ESTABLISHED AND WHY?

In 1997 Tina Botha’s teenage son, Chris Corlett, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. His only chance of survival was a bone marrow stem cell transplant. At the time The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) had less than 1000 donors. After Chris’ first unsuccessful autologous transplant and an unsuccessful search of over 6 million donors worldwide for a second unmatched transplant, Tina began her crusade to find him a suitable donor.

During this time, in 1999, The Sunflower Fund was formed in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett’s heroic struggle against leukaemia. It was formed by Tina and a group of parents whose children had contracted leukaemia, and in some cases had lost their battle against it. Their aim was to increase the number of donors on the SABMR. They hoped to give Chris and other patients a chance at finding a suitable bone marrow stem cell donor.

Tina Botha is now the CEO of The Sunflower Fund. To date The Sunflower Fund has raised millions to pay for donor testing to increase the SA Bone Marrow Registry which now has over 63 000 donors.
The Sunflower Fund now operates a national toll-free call centre from Cape Town and has regional offices in Gauteng and KZN.

HOW CAN I BECOME A DONOR?

To find out more about becoming a bone marrow stem cell donor you can call our toll free number on 0800 12 10 82 or visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za.

• Only 2 tubes of blood are needed to REGISTER you as a donor
• Your unique details are then placed on the SA Bone Marrow Registry
• Donating bone marrow stem cells is similar to donating platelets and no longer involves retrieving stem cells from the bone marrow in the hip
CAN ANYONE BECOME A DONOR?

The following criteria need to be adhered to when considering becoming a donor:

• If you are in excellent health and aged between 18 and 50
• You must have no history of Hepatitis or sexually transmitted diseases
• You are particularly sought after if you are male and / or from an African, Asian or mixed ethnic background, as these are very under-represented on our Registry.
• You must weight at least (50 kg)
• You must preferably but not necessarily be a blood donor
• Donors must be well informed and committed to help anyone
• You must be permanently residing in the South Africa (and likely to be for at least the next 2-3 years).
• You also need to be a committed and caring person, who will continued to stay in contact with us and give further blood samples if required.
• If you are identified as a match for a patient and prepared to offer them the chance to live, you would undergo a minor medical procedure in hospital by donating some stem cells. You would also have to take time off work or away from your normal duties (loss of earnings can be reimbursed).

HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST ME TO BECOME A DONOR?

The cost of the required blood tests to become a donor cost approximately R1000. However if you are willing to become a donor and cannot afford this amount The Sunflower Fund will sponsor your test. If you are able to make any donation towards the cost of tissue typing this will be much appreciated.

ONCE I AM A REGISTERED DONOR CAN I CHANGE MY MIND?

You may withdraw from the registry at anytime. However if you are found to be a match and you commit to the procedure a point is reached when withdrawing will have serious, possibly fatal consequences for the patient. We would prefer to have committed donors as you may be the only person in the world who can provide that match.

WHY IS THERE SUCH A HUGE DEMAND ON THE SUNFLOWER FUND TO RAISE FUNDS?

Regrettably The Sunflower Fund and the SABMR do not receive any government funding towards the cost of tissue typing the samples of new donors. They exist solely on donations from the public at large and fundraising events such as The Sunflower Fund National Bandana Day. Most bone marrow registries around the world have their donor samples tissue typed to a DR level. The SABMR currently only has 6% of donors tissue typed to this level and this needs to be improved to be in line with world wide standards.
If donors are HLA-AB & HLA-DR typed, it is much easier and quicker to find good matches for patients.

However it is very expensive and will be costing around R1000 per test. This is the sole purpose of fundraising at The Sunflower Fund. We do also encourage donors to give us donations to help us with this very important testing if they are in a position to do so.

HOW CAN I ASSIST THE SUNFLOWER FUND IN RAISING FUNDS?

The Sunflower Fund hosts a number of fundraising events throughout the year in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
The Sunflower National Bandana Day takes place each year in September and it is the easiest initiative for the people of South Africa to support. All you need to do is buy your sunflower bandana at a Pick ‘n Pay store near you for only R15 and wear it in support of The Sunflower Fund on 23 September this year.

Each region also hosts an annual fundraising ball, which are always great fun and have become a highlight on the social calendar for many people.

This year the Cape Town Ball will take place on 1 November and the Johannesburg Ball on 18 October.

For more information on these and other events please visit our website – www.sunflowerfund.org.za. There is no such thing as a small donation, every bit helps and we appreciate the support immensely.

HOW CAN I JOIN ?

All donors MUST call the National Call Centre toll free 0800 12 10 82 at The Sunflower Fund weekdays between 9am – 4pm;
• They will be asked a few important questions to establish that they fit all the medical criteria.
• They will then be issued with a donor application form and their own unique reference number.
• From there they will be directed to their closest testing centre.
• Donors must arrive at testing centre with Sunflower application form and their own reference number.
• Donors must fill in ALL information on the forms – contact details are critical in the event of you being a match and in order to trace you at that point.
• We have to have a second contact address in order to trace people who may have moved after many years.
• We have to know donor heritage/ethnic group in order to get the best possible match for the patients

The fight is long and ongoing. But you can make a difference. Because every person who registers gives us one more chance to save a life.

You may be someone’s only chance. Please act now. Call 0800 12 10 82

WHY IS OUR ETHNIC ORIGIN OR HERITAGE IMPORTANT WHEN SEARCHING FOR A PERFECT MATCH ?

Ethnic origin/heritage is very important when matching donors and patients. The ‘markers’ that are tested when searching for a match are genetically inherited and often unique to a particular race. There are currently not enough volunteers on the Register from 211 ethnic groups. This includes African, African-Caribbean, Asian, Chinese, Eastern European, Mediterranean, as well as donors of mixed ethnic background.

If we were lucky enough to have an identical twin, we would have a perfect match. There is a 1 in 4 chance of having a sibling that matches. But for 75% of patients they are not this fortunate and have to look on the bone marrow registry for an unrelated matched donor.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM A PERFECT MATCH & CHOSEN AS A DONOR FOR SOMEONE?

You will also undergo a medical examination to ensure that you are in good health.

The stem cells are obtained by collection from the peripheral blood on a machine called a cell separator.

This simple, minor medical procedure, with minimal discomfort, entails you being connected to the machine by an intravenous line (similar to donating platelets) Only the stem cells are collected and your own blood is returned to you.
No extended recuperation period should, therefore, be necessary, although you are likely to feel tired for a short time afterwards.
