Charlize Theron's 'Cinnabon' Dress
Oscars 2010 Red Carpet Report!
The 82nd Academy Awards was absolutely fabulous this year – and definitely it was one of the most glamourous red carpets I’ve seen in recent years.
One theme on the Oscars red carpet was the “Avatar” inspired blue dress – worn with panache and gardenias by Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe of “Precious”. Mo’Nique, who won Best Supporting Actress – wore the same shade of blue as Hattie McDaniel of “Gone With the Wind” when she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1940. Suzy Amis, the wife of “Avatar” director James Cameron was also in blue.
Then there were shades of purple. Zoe Saldana of “Avatar” wore a beautiful crystal bustier and lavender satin skirt that showed off feminine ruffles. More ruffles with Vera Farmiga of “Up In the Air”, who had a spectacular magenta ruffled gown that really wowed the carpet with bright, intense colour.
Charlize Theron wore a John Galliano for Dior gown that had rosettes on her chest, and was more “Moulin Rouge” than “mademoiselle.” She didn’t earn too many marks for that dress – possibly one of the worst of the evening -- but you can say one thing, people are still talking about that dress!
The red carpet was awash in colour – shades of red, yellow, and magenta -- but metallics emerged as the trend of the evening with a contingent of leading ladies shimmering softly in silver, champagne and gold.
Sandra Bullock – who won “Best Actress” -- wore a richly embroidered, golden Marchesa gown, neat hair and reddish purple lipstick. Definitely one of my favourites of the evening. She looked so amazing – you just wanted her to win!
Cameron Diaz was equally regal in jewel-encrusted Oscar de la Renta, Kate Winslet wore restrained statuesque Yves Saint Laurent, Helen Mirren shone in a pretty Badgley Mischka and Miley Cyrus took spring's lingerie trend to heart with a gold bustier gown.
Amanda Seyfried made the most spectacular entrance of all in a silver ice-goddess gown with sculpted bodice, fashion-forward and fairy princess at the same time.
Jennifer Lopez, she wore a silvery pink Armani Prive cinderella gown with a dramatic hip treatment that needed two seats for her to sit! Wow factor? Yes definitely!
Carey Mulligan, nominated for Best Actress in “An Education” – wore a black strapless mullet Prada dress embellished with tiny scissors and knives. It was short in the front, long in the back. Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who advised Carey to wear a short frock.
And then there was red. Sigourney Weaver was draped in a one-shoulder Lanvin red gown fastened with a huge brooch – though I still always imagine Sigourney Weaver bald and wearing Army clothes – so seeing her this feminine was definitely striking. Penelope Cruz also wore the most gorgeous shade of crimson – a dark red that was attention grabbing – while being classy at the same time.
Sarah Jessica Parker in a butter yellow Chanel dress with a jeweled choker – very “Sex in the City” but she did look slightly uncomfortable while presenting on stage.
Diane Kruger was magnificent in a black and white ruffled gown that was classic Chanel.
My favourite best-dressed men were Zac Efron, with his skinny tie; Taylor Lautner, who looked amazing with Kristen Stewart (who never smiles!) Tom Ford looked fabulous – and George Clooney looked distinguished and incredibly handsome. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, both nominated in “Invictus” – also looked fantastic.
And finally, Katheryn Bigelow, who made history by being the first female to ever win “Best Director” in the Oscars – wore a grey gown that was figure hugging and conservative to fit the theme of her movie, “The Hurt Locker” – which walked away with the most Oscars – 6 – on the night.
And there ya have it – a rundown of the highlights of the Oscars 2010 Red Carpet!
