TECHVIEW - TOP PICKS

POSTED BY MELATTREE, OCTOBER 31, 2009 12:00 PM | PERMALINK | 6 VOTES

We’ve been doing this feature for 45 weeks; this post is the final TechView with the KFC Global Express so we thought it fitting to:

a) Pick the top picks that we’ve featured this year.

b) Offer an awesome kick-ass prize – deets at the end of the post…. it’s naaais very naaais!

We’ve covered everything from mp3 players to concept gadgets to green gadgets to photo tools, mobile apps, IM apps, laptop bags, wearable tech and party essentials. Here are some of the posts and particular gadgets and apps that we like the most.

Top Dog

Because everyone wants to be the Top Dog...

COOL MOBILE APP: Shazam!

It’s quirky, cute and very very clever. ‘What’s that song? Who sings it?’ Hold your phone up to the speaker and Shazam gives you all the details. Shazam has been around since 2002 and is now the best-known music ID app. Functions mainly using Blackberry, android and iPhone – good news is that Shazam is now available for more handsets. I managed to download it from the Nokia ovi store and it’s working well – at the moment they are offering it for free as an exclusive introductory offer.

USEFUL POST: Find the fans

Using social media to promote your music.

It’s all about the music…. it’s what you love, what you live for – but it’s no good if no one else knows what you’re writing, recording and performing. The web offers you so many different platforms through which to promote your band or yourself as a musician. This post covers some websites that you can use to better chat with your groupies and share your latest videos, songs, events and news.

FOR THE WISHLIST: Kindle

Perhaps the most coveted e-reader, the Kindle is an uber stylish wireless e-reader thin enough to cut cheese and big enough to hold over 1500 books.

The display has been improved from the first generation Kindle and reads like real paper with faster page turns. Longer Battery Life means you can read for days without recharging.

The best news is that the latest generation Kindle now ships to SA, and it now supports international wireless. This means that we'll be able to download e-books using wireless direct to the Kindle - no PC needed. I have a feeling the Kindle is on many Christmas lists this year.

Check out the Kindle over at Amazon

THE HOW TO: WTF is Twitter?

Perhaps the most talked about social network this year, not just thanks to celebs like Ashton Kutcher but also because every major TV news station has credited twitter at some stage. 5FM  joined twitter this year and the interaction between twitter and our on-air activities has been exciting.  Perhaps you’re nervous of using twitter or think that it’s a waste of time…. like any social network you need a reason for being there – what do I get out? If you’re interested and clueless then check out our handy WTF is Twitter? post. It covers the basic etiquette and will help to get you started.

GOT GAME?: PSPgo

The latest in handheld gaming consoles, the PSPgo is 50% smaller than the original PSP. They’ve incorporated slide out controls to reduce the size but retain the importance of max screen space. The PSPgo has a built-in mic, Bluetooth support, 16GB hard drive to hold your games, movies or tv shows. Very cool, I think this too will be a hit on the present lists this year.

GO GREEN: The power of solar

Charge your cell phone, PDA, iPod, laptop or MP3 Player with one of these gadgets. Your cell phone charger is drawing power when it is plugged in, whether you are charging your cell phone or not. Use the power of the sun (we have a lot!) to charge your equipment while still being mobile.

Most chargers either use solar power (preferable) or batteries. Check out the battery powered Power Monkey - Power Chimp or the Solar powered Power Monkey – Solar Monkey

There are plenty of other portable power chargers available as well as backpacks with built in solar panels and wind up power sources. Locally, take a look a The Green Shop - you can buy all sorts of Green tools online to help you in your eco-living quest.

DROP THE BEAT: Online DJ Tools

5FM is all about the music – check out the post we did on online DJ and music mixing tools - whether you’re a seasoned professional or a basic beginner try these tools out for size……

UBER-PORTABLE COMPUTING: Nokia enters the battle of the NetBooks

Stay connected all day long with the Nokia Booklet 3G this high-performance mini laptop makes a big impression. Uber-portable and stylish (ultrathin 2 cm body) the Nokia Booklet runs for up to 12 hours as you travel from place to place, and built-in 3G and Wi-Fi ensure you’re always connected.

nokia booklet

4. POSTED BY SIGMAZ, October 31, 2009 12:18 PM

Haha well i'm a gadget guy guy so I would probably die in the fire deciding what to take with me. I would have to say my iPhone 3G - Facebook, Email, Mxit, iPod, Internet All-in-one! I can't lose! :D

5. POSTED BY BRADRAM777, October 31, 2009 12:24 PM

1- At the moment) There's nothing worth risking getting burnt! i guess i'd have to keep my old frot cellphone in my pocket so it'll have to do :)

2-With a Nokia booklet) Well i guess there's no option there! I'd take one for the team and get a lil burnt, But I have to get my awesome new Nokia booklet! ;)

6. POSTED BY KELANI, October 31, 2009 12:43 PM

My Nokia Booklet that I would have won from 5FM. :)

That way, I'll be able to Google the nearest fire station's contact numbers with the built-in 3G functionality on the Booklet. :)

7. POSTED BY SAH, October 31, 2009 12:47 PM

I'd definately grab my cellphone (Nokia 6120 Classic). Did you ever see that pic saying "I love my computer because my friends live in it" ? Well that's my phone for you ;) Varsity keeps me pretty busy but I can still chat to my friends with calls, smses, mxit, facebook, e-mail, etc. It makes it so much eaiser to let my friends know I still love them even with my nose in a book.

Saying that, it also lets me study on the move because of the Office software it comes with. I often download my lecture notes and read them all on my phone which has proven very useful on bus trips ;D.

I keep my ideas on it so I don't forget them and of course it fits in my pocket so it's always with me (my extra limb, ha ha).

Software that an e-device comes with is very important to me so that I can use it right away.

8. POSTED BY JESSN, October 31, 2009 01:08 PM

Despite my love for technology, I'm never able to afford the gadgets I most desire!

I think, though, that despite the tough choice I'd have choosing between my Nikon80 DSLR, old school (RED) iPod Nano and my bashed up Nokia 3600 Slide - I'd go with my cell. The pictures might not even begin to compare to my Nikon, the storage capability may not as large as my iPod but my cell is still my most irreplacable item. Not only does it connect me to the internet (via GPRS noggal), store a choice few favourite tunes, pick-up 5FM and keep me in touch with friends, it stores many a memory. From drunken texts I shouldn't have sent, to meaningful declarations of friendship and snaps of life caught on the move, it's the memories stored on it that make it irreplacable. Plus, it still works even though I've dropped it down several flights of stairs, out of a car and stepped on it on numerous occasions. Go Nokia for durable technology ;)

9. POSTED BY MONTE01, October 31, 2009 01:20 PM

I need a technology overhaul, it’s been a tough few months with no moola for new tech. In the interests of new product cycles and R&D, getting new kit in front of the consumer sooner, I’d probably let all my stuff burn. Progress comes at a price. My E66’s always on me, so I’d be sorted there, connected ek se.

10. POSTED BY KEITH-INGLE, October 31, 2009 01:23 PM

I would def have to say my camera. even if it is right at the back of my house, I'd risk running through the flames and through broken down walls for it. I'd be like a ninja and still be able to get out without getting burnt. I could then use my camera as proof of what i went through, taking photos as i escaped falling debris, thick smoke and exploding appliances. I'd then use a friends computer to send these photos to the ONLY real radio station in SA, 5fm. where hopefully they'd help me start to get back on my feet by letting me win an awesome new Nokia Booklet.
5fm to the power of RAD!!!!

11. POSTED BY HAPPYBUNNY, October 31, 2009 02:27 PM

My portable dvd player

12. POSTED BY SIMMER, October 31, 2009 03:25 PM

Very tough. I'd have to go with my iPhone 3Gs!! I have a laptop, I have an iPod from before I had my iPhone, and I have access to internet, music, movies etc. But I would save my iPhone, because it offers me all of the above and more!! A phone, iPod, internet browsing (Facebook, Yahoo! Mail, Youtube, Twitter etc), cool applications that make life a hell of alot easier, games, entertainment (movies & vids) and, well, you get the point. Plus, I can easily listen to 5fm on the go when I'm without a radio!! :) iPhone 3Gs to the power of 5!!!!!!!

13. POSTED BY PAULO-SERGIO-MARTINS-1, October 31, 2009 10:21 PM

Wonderful!! Cellphone gets saved - it is my command center.

The computer gets nudged towards the fire... ;)

14. POSTED BY MASE, November 01, 2009 06:21 AM

my nokia cellphone i just love it

15. POSTED BY THR3SHETTE, November 01, 2009 07:10 AM

Ooh - this is a tough one. I guess it would have to be my iPod. It has taken me a lifetime to build up my collection of obscure and not-so-obscure tunes, as well as having to use a fair amount of mind jedi in creating playlists that get everyone's (young and old) feet tapping without a single cry of 'Skip to the next song!'.

16. POSTED BY DMAN, November 01, 2009 08:52 AM

Short and sweet my blackberry

17. POSTED BY S114, November 01, 2009 04:50 PM

It has to be my ipod touch, my music is my life i cnt survive with out it.

20. POSTED BY YUSUF01, November 02, 2009 10:38 AM

It would have to be my 1 terrabyte external hard drive filled with all my music that i have collected over the years as well as pictures of me and my family that are of sentimental value to me from way back

21. POSTED BY RONALD-BACH-1, November 02, 2009 11:11 AM

With over 100 apps, my iPhone 3GS would be the first thing I'd grab. I use it from the moment I wake up (digital alarm clock app & News24 app) to the middle of the night (torch app, Skymap app). It gets me where I need to go (Google Maps, Google Earth apps - free Google GPS Nav coming soon!), tells me what I need to be doing (Calendar and GCalendar apps) and what others are doing (Facebook, Linkedin, Mxit and TheGrid apps). I use it to Communicate (e-mail, sms, Fring, Skype apps), catch up on the latest scores (Sport24, Cricinfo, RugbyZone, SI.com and EuroSport apps) Read (Kindle for iPhone, Wattpad & Archie comic apps) , take/edit/share my iPhone photos (Photoshop for iPhone, Flickr, Panoramio & PicPosterous apps) and of course - use it for Entertainment (music, video, podcasts via iPod, YouTube, and a whole bunch of iPhone app games!).

It also has the fire brigade saved in speed dial!

22. POSTED BY ONELARGEPRAWN, November 02, 2009 12:31 PM

Good question. I would have to say my PC box, well more specifically the hard drive, but in an emergency situation, I'd leg it with the whole box under my arm. It has years and years worth of photos that I snapped to capture the fond, funny, and just plain weird moments in our lives. Now that I think about it, I really should back them up...

23. POSTED BY TOASTED77, November 02, 2009 01:37 PM

Id carry my PC on my back like a camel!

24. POSTED BY JULIE-MONK, November 02, 2009 04:03 PM

I'd run though flames to grab my cd player/radio. I'd die without my music!!

25. POSTED BY MASE, November 02, 2009 11:03 PM

my nokia 3120 classic phone

26. POSTED BY RYAN-LORNE-MAHONEY, November 03, 2009 09:10 AM

MY car keys, not much of a gadget, but without them, i cannot get to the post office to collect my 5FM prizes, nor get to work to check my emails to see if i have won! Therefore, they probably the most useful little gadget i own........

27. POSTED BY DAVIDL, November 03, 2009 11:11 AM

My electric nose hair trimmer.

28. POSTED BY VIKTA, November 03, 2009 01:17 PM

29. POSTED BY NOCTURN, November 03, 2009 02:08 PM

30. POSTED BY BRANWEN-BRINK, November 05, 2009 11:23 AM

It would have to be my PDA. It's the size of a mobile and it's got all my sim numbers backed-up on it, my important docs and all my birthday reminders, you kow how people get when you forget their birthday ;-)

31. POSTED BY ROBERT-OLSEN, November 06, 2009 08:53 AM

I can honestly do without most things, but I'd grab my iPod and BOSE sound dock. Only thing is, it has no radio! Can't do without 5FM either...

32. POSTED BY MELATTREE, November 23, 2009 01:54 PM
