“BLING-bling” earrings for cows — that’s what a student has invented to prevent night-time accidents caused by stray cattle on South Africa’s roads.

Reflekt-a-Cow ear tags are the brainchild of Simon Morgan, a doctoral student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s school of biological conservation, who came up with the idea after “two or three very close calls” with cattle on rural roads.

Cattle cost R10 each to tag with Morgan’s devices. That is expensive for many rural stock owners, so the student is now trying to improve his design. - (The Sunday TImes, 30/08/08)
