Be More Madiba

The charity gives underprivileged children the opportunity to have a fun-filled holiday at the sea – many of them have never seen the beach and the 10 days spent are a treasured time for them.   2. Cook soup for Meals on Wheels (countrywide)

There are numerous Meals on Wheels branches around the country, all of which would welcome donations and assistance. The Tygerberg Branch in Parow has a great need of soup, for example. You can cook it and donate it frozen, or deliver fresh or dry ingredients. The team there works very closely with counsellors and schools in the community to keep people fed. Another way to quickly help is to simply sms the word ‘meal’ to 39055 to donate R15

  1. TheEyeMakers and W1CLondon in partnership with The Star/Pretoria News will be distributing 10 000 pairs of reading glasses as part of Mandela Day 2016, valued at over R1-million.

The aim of the Nzalo Mentorship Programme and appeal to you to support this half day initiative is to empower our 67 learners (high school and undergraduates) on career, leadership and personal development skills. This is a full year programme structured to benefit both the mentors and mentees and ensure sustainability.   2. Commit to sorting your trash at source to make life easier for the informal recyclers who rummage through the garbage.

 

39.  Support Sparrow schools: Sparrow is a non-profit outfit that educates children with learning difficulties to grade 9 and then puts them through a tertiary program to develop skills so that they are employable, like floor laying and hotel schooling. Karen Lancaster, fund-raising manager, invites corporates in particular to partner with them in development programs. “It enables the company to reach their BEE score and our kids get jobs!” Call them on 011 673 4410.

 

  1. Drop off a soft toy at the Johannesburg central police station – the toys are kept at the victim empowerment centre to hand out to abandoned and abused children when they come in for counselling.

  3. Johannesburg General Hospital Parktown:  Our team will facilitate your Mandela day events so that your team are able to continue your all important work. Our team are experienced handy men, painters, project coordinator, supply of packs (food, stationary) procurers and packers. We have many years of experience in dealing with the public and will oversee your Mandela day projects. Our NGO charges your cooperate a fee to oversee the day. Makes sure that the project is done well, all mess is cleaned up and completes the project if the team does not get to finish it.

  6. GRIP: • Spend 67 minutes doing maintenance at the Nelspruit Police Station Care Room. The Nelspruit Care Room is in a state. With broken  tiles, broken couches and the walls in dire need of a repaint, you can spend your 67 minutes giving the care room a makeover.  You could also donate paint, couches or money towards the care room. Donate R67 to GRIP: R67 may seem minimal but each rand is another rand the GRIP programme didn’t have before. Come around to   GRIPs offices at 17 Ehmke Street and put R67 into our donation box.

49.  Help Build Container Libraries for Schools around South Africa
Breadline Africa, an internationally recognised non-profit organisation, in association with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, is seeking to combat the country’s poor literacy rates by building container libraries in deserving primary schools. This year’s aim is to build 20 of these innovative, inexpensive structures and corporates are invited to join the cause by providing financial support, sponsoring books and other educational materials and encouraging employees to volunteer to help paint and furnish the libraries. This project is taking place the whole month of July so interested companies are encouraged to support even after Mandela Day. 50.  Help Create and Fill Care Packages with the Rape Crisis Trust
This Mandela Day, you can join the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust, a  South African organisation that supports the recovery of rape survivors and seeks to bring about change in communities, to help create care packages for survivors. Those eager to participate are encouraged to bring along items like underwear (any size for both children and adults; male and female), toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, soap, body wash, face cloths, sanitary pads (not tampons) and nappies to fill the special care packs (please only donate new items). Volunteers will decorate and fill the care packages at the Mowbray Town Hall. Free Walking Tour:  Hosted by Footsteps to Freedom, a company dedicated to organising historical walking tours, this two-hour excursion, which starts at 10am at the Taj Hotel lobby will serve as a trip back through history and will retrace part of Nelson Mandela’s walk from prison to president. Do note that there are only 20 spots available, and those wanting to participate can book directly with Footsteps to Freedom (footstepstofreedom.co.za).
  2. Book Drive at the Iziko South African Museum: While trotting about in the city, visitors can make their way to the Iziko South African Museum, which will not only be featuring a Mandela-inspired exhibition titled Tata Madiba: Father of our Democracy, Father of our Nation, but will also be collecting old books to donate to an underprivileged community library. Novels can be dropped off at the museum’s reception desk. Those who have already visited the museum can gain free entry to explore the Iziko South African National Gallery on the day too.
  3. Make HOPE Bracelets for the Chaeli Campaign
    The Chaeli Campaign, a non-profit organisation that offers support to children living with disabilities, will be at the Blue Route Mall in Tokai from 10am to 5pm for their Mandela Day challenge. For R67, shoppers can make and purchase HOPE (Helping Other People Every Day) bracelets – all the charms, beads and twine will be provided. Volunteers will get to make three pieces of jewellery: one to keep for themselves, one to pay-it-forward to someone else who might appreciate the gesture and the third to go back to the Chaeli Campaign.   4. Join the Million Meal Challenge by Stop Hunger Now
    Stop Hunger Now, an NGO that seeks to eradicate world hunger, is muscling up and gathering forces to pull off a daunting task on Friday, 15 July (the day before Mandela Day): packing 1 million meals for Early Childhood Development Facilities in under-resourced areas in South Africa in one day. If successful, this will be a world first! This initiative is nationwide, and in Cape Town, will take place at the Food Court in Canal Walk on Friday, 17 July.   11. iLembe District Municipality. The District of iLembe is home to many senior citizens but unfortunately most of our senior citizens live below the breadline so civil servants will be donating blankets, walking sticks and seed packs for subsistence farming. The municipality will also be holding a medical check-ups as well as a soup kitchen. This will be done through Food & Trees for Africa - the first and only South African social enterprise that develops, promotes and facilitates greening, climate change action, food security and sustainable natural resource use and management.

As part of this initiative, Neotel has partnered with the Adopt-a-School Foundation, which encourages corporates to get involved in the schools that they are supporting and ensures that such projects continue well into the future.

  1. Bokamoso Community Outreach: Johannesburg , Gauteng

Activity: The Bokamoso Cross Mentorship Programme was established in 2007 by a group of young professionals who wanted to make a change in the country. We are a mentorship program that seeks to achieve a holistic development of high school learners.

For the 2014 year, we have identified a school whose learners are participating in the programme. Kwena Molapo High School is situated Lanseria and the learners are mainly from the Diepsloot, Thabo Mbeki informal settlements and surrounding Lanseria plots.

As part of the 2014 Bokamoso Social Outreach Programme, we will be refurbishing and repairing these mobile classrooms. The mentors and mentees on the programme will be painting the classrooms and erecting the classroom prefab structures into place. The other activities on the day involve cleaning the school and also stocking up the library with books donated by the mentees and mentors of the programme.

The day highlights the need and responsibility to serve wherever possible. The social responsibility day is often one that stands out in the year and one that we are proud to host at Bokamoso.

  1. Cleaning the Monwabisi Old Age Home in Nyanga with Springboks Bryan Habana and Tebobo “Oupa” Mohoje

Activity: Cleaning the Monwabisi Old Age Home in Nyanga, reading for the children, TAG Rugby, children entertainment (jumping castle, face painting and balloon sculpting), and live radio broadcasting.

Locals are asked to join Springboks Bryan Habana and Tebobo “Oupa” Mohoje as well as 60 children on the TAG Rugby Association programme in Nyanga and approximately 200 children from the community.

  1. City Parks and The Joburg Zoo go big for International Mandela Day

Activity: The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) are cleaning the city’s parks and taking a bus drive in and around the city with the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Clr Mpho Parks Tau as part of Mandela day 67minutes celebration.

The entourage will take a tour in a branded “Mandela Bus” which will be pit-stopping and participating in cleaning at various Mandela Day activities throughout Joburg.

The bus will arrive at 8:10am at the Johannesburg Metro Centre in Braamfontein departing at 8:30am to its next destination Joubert Park, Inner City at 9am. Join the Mayor as he participates alongside the community members in cleaning activities and handing over blankets at Joubert Park.

We’ll start in Joubert Park where approximately 200 homeless people will be cleaning the park, receiving a bite to eat and the distribution of blankets. The nearby crèche will receive a paint job and goodies handed to the children.

Citizens are asked to join hands with the Mayor as he helps celebrate Tata Madiba’s legacy of Ubuntu with the MMC for Community Development Clr Chris Vondo, the Managing Director of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Mr Bulumko Nelana by doing their part, either through clean-up, clearing of illegal dumping sites, river clean-up or anything which will be impactful to their environment.
