BRIEFLY:

Dan Corder joined 5FM in April 2021.

He studied at the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University and had a successful university debating career. He and his speaking partner were crowned African champions, and still hold the record for best-performing African team at the World Championships.

Dan quit debating to focus on radio at the campus station during Rhodes Must Fall, and his show gained prominence for its coverage of the protests. Because of his work, he was fortunate enough to co-host a special edition show on the BBC World Service, broadcasting around the world. Through this, he gained industry attention, and signed his first commercial radio contract at Good Hope FM in Cape Town at 21 years old.

Dan spent six years at Good Hope FM, during which time he progressed from Weekend Breakfast hosting, through weekday midmornings, weekday lunch, and finally the Breakfast Show. During this time, Dan also directed a documentary on university injustices that made worldwide news headlines, picked up a few South African Radio Award finalist acknowledgements, and started the podcasting company that he still runs today.

In 2021, he got the call to host 5FM Breakfast. Hosting this show is something he never thought would happen for him, far beyond his wildest dreams.

QUICKFIRE Q&A:

Where were you born and raised?

Technically Cape Town, but really on UCT campus. My parents are both academics and lecturers, so much of my young life revolved around UCT.

In which towns have you lived and where are you living currently?

Most of my life has been in Cape Town. I stayed in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) for half a year while studying at Rhodes University, and I have stayed in Johannesburg since joining 5FM.

Which languages can you speak?

English, Afrikaans, French (although out of practice).

What are your favourite towns or cities visited in SA and abroad?

I adore Cape Town and Johannesburg. I also love Paternoster, which is a small coastal village on the West Coast of the Western Cape. Istanbul is the city I have enjoyed most, of all the places I have been lucky enough to travel to.

What are your hobbies?

Football/soccer is my religion. I’m completely obsessed. I walk, hike and run often, and I spend hours a day consuming news and current affairs.

What is the craziest thing you’ve done?

I visited the Niger Delta in Nigeria during a time when the extremist group Boko Haram was active in the area. Many people advised me not to go, because of the seemingly very real chance that I’d be mistaken for an American and kidnapped for ransom. Fortunately, nothing happened, and we won the debating tournament.

Which pets do you have, if any?

None at the moment, sadly.

What’ll Google say you search for most often?

Soccer news.

5 famous people, living or not, that you would have a kuier with?

Stromae, James Acaster, Kendrick Lamar, Christiane Amanpour, Leonard Cohen.

Favourite movies and / or series of all time?

The death of Stalin.

Describe your home’s interior style?

Soft brown wood and metal, spare, proteas and fynbos, good couch non-negotiable.

Which hash tags best describe your fashion sense?

#Jacket #Jeans #Adidas #Black #Green

What is your ideal holiday, described in one line?

Cederberg in December.

A hidden talent that you could probably get paid for:

I make an incredible tomato and onion pasta. Also, if arguing/debating was a paid-for profession.

Which sports, if any, do you watch?

All soccer, Formula One, Olympic sports, running, rugby and cricket. Australian rules Football.

Which causes are you really passionate about?

Helping children in need. I am deeply upset by the knowledge of children in abusive situations, and children without care, food, good medical treatment, safety, and good education opportunities, and am always keen to try to do some good to help.

What are the top things on your bucket list?

Spend time in Mali and Senegal, for the music. Spend time in Istanbul. Spend time in Colombia.

Which things in the world (and people) do you dislike?

Selfishness, deceit, bigotry, cruelty, ignorance.

Which things make the world (and people) awesome?

Empathy, love, creativity, humour, joy.

What’s your favourite thing about your 5FM gig?

The daily connection and union with listeners, as we all go through life together, and share joy and love for good music and good company.
