What's that song?
Ever had a tune stuck in your head but you don’t know where it’s from, who sings it or what it is? Course you have. And yes, we agree, it is pretty frustrating when you totally love a song but don’t know what it is so can’t get a copy of it to listen to, instead having to listen to the musically challenged voices in your head.
I’m loving Musipedia, an online service “Inspired by, but not affiliated with Wikipedia, (who are) building a searchable, editable, and expandable collection of tunes, melodies, and musical themes.” How will this quieten the voices? By helping users find songs and compositions without knowing their names or words, using a set of online tools to find the song by whistling, tapping, using piano keyboard or drawing notes.
For those of you who are clever musical types (oooh, excuse you!), you can play out the tune, making it just vaguely recognisable, using the provided keyboard (in both Flash and Java) or by drawing notes. The system will then compare the tune against its database to find your song. The much easier option though would have to be whistling. Using your inbuilt microphone, whistle the tune for a few seconds so that Musipedia can recognize the song and give you the results.
It’s silly, but I dig it. (Although I have to be honest, my whistling is so bad even that it’s yet to actually work for me, but why don’t you give it a try and let us know the results?)
