Add some colour to Pride this year with a month of gay cinema, as part of Take Pride month at Cinema Nouveau Theatres nationwide from Friday, 25 September. Pride Month is presented in association with SA’s premier gay lifestyle website Mambaonline.com and Joburg Pride 2009 (which takes place on 3 October).
From a biopic on the HIV-positive star of MTV’s “Real World” to the true-life story of artist Salvador Dali (starring TWILIGHT star Robert Pattinson), and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of online chat rooms… Take Pride month will premiere each movie for two weeks only, exclusive to Cinema Nouveau:
25 September – PEDRO
9 October – COLLEGE BOYS LIVE
23 October – LITTLE ASHES
PEDRO was written by the Oscar-winning writer of MILK, and stars Alex Loynaz as earnest “Real World” cast-member Pedro Zamora in this intimate biopic tracing the HIV-positive immigrant's rise from humble roots to becoming one of the most instantly recognizable HIV/AIDS activists in the United States as a result of his high-profile role on MTV's pioneering reality television series. In 1992, “The Real World” made its debut on MTV, forever altering the definition of the term ‘celebrity’; providing a sympathetic face to the growing AIDS crisis for the millions of Americans who had yet to meet someone suffering from the devastating autoimmune disorder.
Joburg Pride will be hosting a special fundraising premiere for PEDRO on Thursday 24 September at Cinema Nouveau Cedar Square – please contact Natasha on 076 454 2076 or via info@joburgpride.org to reserve your seat, or visit www.joburgpride.org for more information
Going behind the scenes of a 24/7 live website in which participants are observed everywhere - bedroom and bath included - might seem redundant, yet docu-feature COLLEGE BOYS LIVE exerts a bizarre and dramatic fascination by observing that Orwellian experiment-cum-entertainment over a six-month haul. As in TV reality shows, protagonists naturally act out in their unnatural circumstances; the proprietors’ claim that all this somehow affirms "gay is good" are highly compromised by the project's voyeuristic exploitation.
Whether intentionally selected, or because no one in his right mind would sign on, the residents tend to be from broken homes or otherwise troubled backgrounds; this high-tech fishbowl therefore represents a questionable improvement. Crises include a lawsuit-forced move, one subscriber's increasingly obsessive friendship with a resident, and a boy's ejection for out-of-control behavior.
LITTLE ASHES (starring TWILIGHT star Robert Pattinson) is set in Madrid 1922, and follows the early years of legendary surreal artist Salvador Dali. The world is on the edge of a renaissance as traditional values are challenged by the “dangerous” new influences of Jazz, Freud and the avant-garde. Dali arrives at university; 18 years old and determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university's socio-cultural elite - Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunuel.
Salvador is absorbed into their youthfully decadent group and for a time Salvador, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However as time passes, Salvador feels and increasingly strong pull towards the charismatic Federico - who is himself oblivious of the attentions he is getting from his beautiful writer friend, Magdalena.
