Besides professing “I Don’t Like Mondays”, over the last two years CASSETTE “Sometimes” made “Love With The Light On”, to a girl named “Tracy”. With her “Beautiful Smile” capturing the attention of radio and fans from Tokyo to Tygerberg, the relationship is now bordering on pop paranoia with the band’s return and biggest single statement yet – “Who Do You Trust?”

Freshly flown in from Los Angeles, USA, CASSETTE’s brand new single and title track to their hugely anticipated second album is set to shake pop convention right down to its very core.
Not satisfied with going from Indie underdogs to 2007 SAMA award winners and globe trotters, Jon Savage (vocals), Jane Breetzke (keys), Andrew Wessels (drums) and Nathan Waywell (bass) decided to up the game they played on their debut disc [Welcome Back To Earth]. Fast forward to March 2009 and the world as we know will be renewed for the better, all thanks to a brand new CD from CASSETTE.
With a recently inked record deal with EMI Music CASSETTE spent the latter part of 2008 chained to the studio along with genius producer Darryl Torr (he of Harris Tweed/Dear Reader fame), when like-minded internationally respected players started knocking at their studio door. “When Mark Needham (the guy who is most famous for his work with the Killers and Chris Isaak) got attached, we knew we were onto something big,” admits Savage.
So signing to the mammoth machine that is EMI Music was a logical next step. “They gave us complete freedom and got behind every decision we made,” Savage enthuses. “We were impressed by their approach and flexibility, and it let us take the album where it needed to go. Sometimes you just want to focus on the music as a band, and not always worry about selling albums and marketing. EMI has such a great infrastructure that allows us to do what we do best, and we’re a better band today because of it.”
Besides the killer first single, CASSETTE have 10 more equally wicked reasons to adopt wild abandon come the album’s March release. What’s even more unambiguous is that CASSETTE has since bloomed since Welcome Back To Earth first blossomed. “When we started working on “Who Do You Trust?” with Darryl, he had just won a Grammy for producing Soweto Gospel Choir,” Savage celebrates. “Sonically he’s added a whole new world to this album and found space and size where you least expect it. We were also listening to loads of Kings of Leon and listening to the size of what they were doing. It was an inspiring time. Add our human tech-wizard; Grant Katzin who played engineer, and very quickly we were exploring every single nuance to create the best sounds.
The final piece in the puzzle was Mark Needham. “The guy is an international legend!” Savage rejoices “He added so much to the mix! He has loads of Grammy nominations. Oh, and there is Steve Hall, our master-meister. At last count he had won 15 Grammys! That's a lot of Grammy award winners for one album.”
Before CASSETTE won their first SAMA in 2007 and a nomination for Best Live Performance at the 2008 MTV Awards, the band was considered by many as inconspicuous. “It's very easy to impress people when they don’t have any expectations of you,” Savage jests. “So we managed to impress people a lot. As soon as you win a SAMA, the tables turn. You are expected to be good. We have poured our hearts and souls into this album and you will definitely hear that. It's very personal, it's very hard hitting and it's very honest. We’ve explored and mined our own creative heights and have not merely "duplicated the formula. We’ve pushed ourselves and have taken a lot of risks all that makes for some appealing listening.”
With surprise collaborations, tweaks and twiddles intended to surprise and delight coupled with an explosive live show heading to a town near you when the full album drops in March, CASSETTE and their new single “Who Do You Trust?” will, until then, most certainly satisfy those ravenous for perpetual pop.
