This country should be like Australia where it is a crime not to vote. The percentage polls are disgraceful and as the elections cost so much each and every citizen should make full use of them. I think registration should be done more automatically though, like with a light account, bank account or something similar.

I would love to vote, but i am in the UK for the rest of the year on contract and "apparently" cannot vote from there! If poloticians want as many young people to vote as possible, they should get off their lazy asses and do something about it. I am a proud South African and love my country, but Government want skilled workers to bring their skills back to SA, they should make every effort to entice us, not sit back and say "I they want to leave, then they must leave!".

Voting is a good sign of a democratic process but then the problem lies with these South African campaigners who's manifestos seemingly manifest the idea of "put us in power so we can govern" rather than "put us in power so we can deliver",I mean why promise the moon and the stars while you don't even have a space shuttle. Contradictions, corruption, incompitants, greed and a lack of "a national vision" are virus that is killing our future.

We all need to vote, even if you an ANC voter, you need to vote for an opposition whether its the DA, COPE, ID or any other party. We can no longer allow the ruling party to be so complacent and therefore require a strong opposition to keep them on there toes. Just look at any working democracy such as the US, UK, France or Germany, they all have two really strong parties which keep there economy and service delivery in check. Corruption is everywhere, but if there are more people who vote on proper ideologies and against a ruling party then they can make it difficult for the ANC to take that extra bribe and instead use the money to do good. Viva the OPPOSITION!! Come on young ppl, REGISTER and VOTE its in everyone's interest even if you dont think so! - BRUNO

lol anonymous.. i completely agree.. im so tired of hearing people say "whats the point" and "it never counts" .. the reason young people take this stance is because they dont understand how cabinet and parliament works.. they should find out before making up their minds about voting.. because in actual fact every vote does count. e-d-u-c-a-t-e them before demanding.

I did register to vote. But what breaks my heart is that I yet have to vote for poeple who don't do nothing for us. Please help, I am tired of poeple who always promise lies. Maybe former Mpulamanga Premier was right, "It is a good idea for politicial to lie, so that you vote for them and don't get the service at the end". Thats what he once said.

as i am a young person from the townships, i realy don't see any reason for voting, because at the end only people in big positions gain from the results of our votes

Not voting flies in the face of everything our grandfathers, mothers, fathers and anyone living in the Apartheid era fought for. It's clear that we've forgotten all that and still have the audiacity to moan about our circumstances today. I'd like to see what the demographic of registered voters. I'm sure the majority of those who registered are the poor and disenfranchised. And ironically, these are also the people who are proud to be South Africans and still have hope that things will get better. Something to think about...

If you dont vote you have no right to moan about the country!

It pains me to see some of the feelings of eligible South African voters these days...while people in the U.S ran to the polls when they wanted change. When will South Africans decide we want change?

I agree with anonymous (nr 2), South Africans living abroad should be able to vote but sadly after the first elections that wasn't possible . Even though I've been gone for some time, I return as often as I can and am def. proud of my country...why not let those vote who really want to??

South Africa seems to preach that we are a democracy, yet the evidence couldn't be further from the truth. How is it that a crime fighting force like the Scorpions is disbanded and we as the countries citizens don't get to vote to facilitate this decision? It makes a mockery of everything we supposedly stand for. We have not vote in what happens in South Africa except when it comes to election day. One more point is that I find it amazing that citizens who are not in the country cannot vote, yet criminals in state prisons are given the right to vote! Surely they lost these rights when they chose to break the law?

To Posts 9 & 10, I say; there are many people like U who say what's the point of voting, because it's not going to change things?, etc., etc.......! The truth is EVERY NO VOTE STRENGTHENS THE PARTIES U OPPOSE, we seriously need a change of government. The ANC has just become too arrogant, corrupt and disrespectful towards the people of this country. A true leader should become a servant to his people!
