5FM’S CODE YOUTH – A LAUNCHPAD FOR MZANSI’S YOUTH CODING SKILLS
May 11,2026
Johannesburg, Monday, 11 May 2026 – 5FM, South Africa’s favourite youth radio station, is turning Youth Month into a launchpad for the future with Code Youth, a high-energy, hands-on digital skills bootcamp created to give young South Africans the most valuable skill sets of the 21st century.
In partnership with WeThinkCode_, this nationwide CSI initiative brings coding, creativity and real digital confidence directly to the youth who need it most – completely free and designed for absolute beginners. Because 5FM isn’t only about the hottest tunes and the biggest vibes… we’re a station that Ampli5s the future of Mzansi’s most promising young talent.
Running across Johannesburg on 12 June, Cape Town on 19 June and Pretoria on 26 June, Code Youth takes participants from zero to digital hero in just a few hours. No prior experience required, just pure empowerment, practical learning and a chance to build something solid that could pave the way to any future you choose.
Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for 5FM and Good Hope FM, says, “5FM has always been about Top 40 energy, the hottest youth news, trending topics and connection, but it’s also about purpose. We’re more than the beats, the vibes and the epic event memories. We’re a station with a heart that beats for empowering South Africa’s youth to accomplish any dream they set their minds to.”
Those who attend can expect a full, interactive day where they’ll learn the basics of digital literacy, write their first lines of code and even build their own game. The experience is practical, fun and designed to unlock confidence and curiosity in the world of tech.
Highlights include:
– From zero to digital confidence – computer basics, internet navigation, smarter searching
– First steps into coding – simple, engaging programming concepts for total beginners
– Build real programs using Python – create functional mini-projects from scratch
– Think like a problem-solver – break down challenges and build solutions step by step
– Create your own game – design a game using Python
